Calen Steiner, MD, MS – Associate Director
As a physician-scientist with an active IBD clinic, Dr. Calen Steiner brings a vital dual perspective to his role as Associate Director of the CU IBD Biobank. His clinical practice drives his commitment to solving the most pressing complications facing IBD patients—such as intestinal stricturing and scarring (fibrosis), for which no anti-fibrotic therapies currently exist. To accelerate discoveries in this space, Dr. Steiner’s own research relies heavily on human tissue-based model systems, including patient-derived organoids, enteroids, and colonoids. Because his lab actively leverages these advanced translational platforms and next-generation sequencing techniques, Dr. Steiner deeply understands the exact infrastructure, specimen quality, and deep clinical annotation that modern investigators need. By bridging his firsthand understanding of patient care with rigorous benchtop science, Dr. Steiner ensures that the CU IBD Biobank maintains the highest standards of scientific utility, serving as a powerful pipeline to transform patient donations into targetable, life-changing therapies.
